While such an interpretation has its merits, it overlooks the way in which Jesus literally moves around the Pharisees’ would-be “object lesson” for Jesus by means of their placement of the woman before him and the crowd. Instead of bending to their plans, Jesus demonstrates his unwillingness to allow others to be used as tools in the conflict with the religious leaders. Jesus does not engage directly with the leaders’ accusation against the woman, who
